Abstract
Background: Schistosomiasis considered one of the most fatal diseases of humans. If it comes to overall morbidity and mortality, it is the second primary parasitic disease, after malaria. 200 million people are believed to be infected with schistosoma, of which 120 million show symptoms and 20 million have a serious illness. An infection could affect 600 million people. A serious public health concern in several Arab nations, including Sudan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Iraq, is schistosomiasis.
Objectives: We investigated the effect of Curcumin, Artemisinin extracts singly, combined Curcumin/Artemisinin extracts, Curcumin Nano, Artemisinin Nano singly and combined Curcumin Nano/ Artemisinin Nano in treatment of Schistosoma mansoni infected mice.
Material and methods: Our study is an experimental study. Infected mice were divided into 7 groups, 10 mice each, divided as following, untreated control group, Curcumin treated group, Artemisinin treated group, Curcumin/Artemisinin treated group, Curcumin Nano treated group and Artemisinin Nano treated group and curcumin Nano/ Artemisinin Nano treated group. All groups under treatment have been given at 4th weak post-infection 3 times/week for 2 consecutive weeks, using a stainless steel oral cannula. Two weeks post treatment the mice have been sacrificed.
Results: Comparing to the +ve control, results showed that curcumin Nano/ artemisinin Nano treated group had highly significant reduction of S. mansoni worm burden and ova burden in all examined S. mansoni infected mice.
Conclusion: Treatment by curcumin Nano/ artemisinin Nano significantly reduced parasite worm burden and ova burden, this combination most effective than all infected treated groups.
